March 2017

For once the Tea Fairy has very sad news to report. The heritage bungalow of Rajah Banerjee caught fire on 16 March 2017 and burnt down completely. Fortunately, nowbody was hurt, but a lifetime of irreplaceable accumulations and memorabilia of four generations have been destroyed. It is heartbreaking that Rajah and his wife Srirupa, who are incarnations of hospitality, have lost their home and all their possessions.

Srirupa's sister has created an Online Fundraiser to give the couple some immediate tangible relief. Rajah Banerjee, who has spearheaded sustainable tea farming in Darjeeling and who is tirelessly seeking new ways to uplift the Makaibari community now needs support.

Times of India reported that "a special lot of handcrafted tea from the Makaibari Tea Estate" was recently auctioned for USD1,850 a kg, thus becoming the most expensive Indian tea ever sold.

Three buyers from the UK, USA and Japan bought 20 kg of the Silver Tips Imperial to sell to selected buyers.

Silver Tips Imperial is plucked in full moon nights, but this particular tea was plucked during a planetary alignment that happens once in 108 years.
